"But,...I want it!!.. And I want it now!!! Daddy!!!"
I recall these words from early in my childhood.. I don't remember saying them to my father.
In fact I'm certain I wouldn't have gotten away with such attitude.
However, you may remember where these words came from..
A spoiled little girl from "Willie Wonka" first spoke them as she taunted and demanded her own way, impishly spouting this very phrase.
Unfortunately for her...and for her father,
he gave her exactly what she wanted
And they both received what they deserved.
And down the chute they went..
While I hope I am nothing like Verruca Salt.
Sadly I can feel this tendency in my heart on a daily basis.
Do you feel the pulling as well??
(Sometimes revealing itself in a whining and complaining spirit)
Fortunately for us, our Heavenly Fathers' love never ceases.
And when He catches us with a bad attitude
He who is wisdom through the ages..knows exactly what we need.
Mercifully, He does not give into our every whim and fancy.
And, thankfully He is not content to leave us in our sin.
Even though studies have shown that we are a 'me driven' society.
We want to be first !
We don't want to wait !!
We definitely want it all !!!
and we want it now !!!!
However, these same studies fail to mention the obvious
We are more than flesh and blood.
We are living souls
with a capacity to recognize
the spirit of life within....in an epic struggle
between good and evil.
We may want it and want it now,
but the spirit within us wars against our flesh.
That is exactly why we notice right from wrong
or are simply too impatient to wait at then end of the checkout line.
Within each of us lay the capcaity to understand crooked vs. straight.
And that is also why....we were quite glad
when after Verrucas' little song and dance
She plopped herself atop the scale
and was promptly determined to be one bad egg!
And off she went!!
Down the chute.....
Daily we fight battles within
If left to ourselves
Like Verrucca
we will become bad eggs.
Thankfully, for each of us
the spirit within...is willing to
give a home to the Spirit of the Holy One
But the Holy One
will only reside when....
we decide to deny our fleshly desires
and ask Him inside our hearts to take over.
Maybe its time to surrender..
To step back and trust Him
to take away the stuff that drains us of life
and instead
be filled with His goodness....
His mercy and love..
