He cozys into my lap, almost every time I sit down to work at my computer. As I peer into his deep black eyes, a deep rumbling purr softly compliments the quietness of the moment. He always looks up at me, when I look at him...waiting patiently for some attention.
Often, I find myself thinking about the amount of time we give to the the chirping and beeping rectangular screens that have seemingly made our lives much easier in our computerized age.
When I first began flying many years ago, the challenge to 'prepare the cabin for landing' was much less complicated as well. Now we have gadgets in every hand and showing up in every size. 'Power down' has become part of a dialogue which is instantly understood, by each person, who has been sitting there ignoring everyone around them, in order to text that last minute message.
In restaurants, people share meals with family and dear friends while speaking intently to someone from cyberspace who wasn't even invited, while the other person waits quietly, either for anticipated conversation or possibly hoping for their own cell phone to ring in order to fill the void...
I think it is crucial to do a self assessment...A friend of mine recently wrote these words...
"My study of history has led me to believe theory suggesting that technological advancement and science in the current millennium has made us smarter than people who lived a hundred years ago is completely untrue.
All the overload of pointless opinionated information that we stuff continually into our brains via electronics has only managed to turn us into encyclopedic robots who remain cut off from any real knowledge."
-Michael Thompson
Remember ...
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."
-Proverbs 1:7
So, in taking a hard look at myself...I realize, I can be just as guilty.
I have decided that today....
Will be a day of looking deeply into someones eyes when they are speaking to me. I will listen as they speak.
I will turn my cell phone off during meals and especially in the car (if we all did this, this action alone could save countless lives).
And I will search for the knowledge that someone longs to share with me.
I will give them the gift of now.
So...my kitty has returned,...I think I will head for the living room and really 'live' in the moment!!!. There are scriptures to be read....thoughts to be shared and other hearts waiting.
In this age of technology, that supposedly allows us to communicate more, we actually communicate less than ever before, creating an isolation that often leaves us feeling lonely and abandoned.
So, today instead of being isolated in this unintended irony, remember to...
..."choose you this day, whom you will serve".... (Joshua 24:15)
Give the gift of now and live in the moment!!!
